China Named the Mountains Under Philippine Waters 🇵ðŸ‡
East of Luzon sits the Philippine Rise (Benham Rise), a sunken plateau twice the size of Luzon — 24 million hectares. In 2012, the UN approved the Philippines' continental shelf claim over it. But China had already surveyed it, and five of its underwater mountains carry Chinese names to this day: Haidongqing, Jinghao, Tianbao, Jujiu, and Cuiqiao. Manila fought to erase the names, and lost. The frozen methane below could one day help fuel the Philippines. For now, Filipino mountains keep Chinese names.
