The UN just voted 164 to 1 to move away from the Mercator map and endorse Equal Earth. Here is why every wall map you grew up with made Greenland look the size of Africa, and what the world actually looks like. On September 4, 2026 the UN General Assembly adopted the African Union backed "Correct the Map" resolution, endorsing the 2018 Equal Earth projection over the 450 year old Mercator map. The vote was 164 for, 1 against (the United States), 6 abstentions. The resolution is non-binding: it encourages Equal Earth as the default in schools and media. Mercator works by wrapping the globe onto a cylinder and unrolling it. Great for navigation, but it inflates everything near the poles. Greenland (2.2M km²) ends up drawn as large as Africa (30.4M km²), which is about 14 times bigger in reality. Equal Earth keeps every country at its true relative size. This animation shows the real transformation: globe to cylinder to Mercator to Equal Earth, at one scale, with equal-area circles so you can see the distortion move.
